This trek combines two of the most scenic routes up Mt. Kenya.
This combination offers undeniably the most magnificent ascent route to the summit at Point Lenana Peak, 4985m. This 5-day hiking allows you a comfortable hiking pace, giving you time to ascend the peak in a safe pace while acclimatizing to avoid altitude sickness.
Climbing Mount Kenya via Chogoria route is entirely camping. Accommodation on this route is in high altitude camping tents, fully provided with mattresses. On the first night, we camp at the Meru Bandas followed by Lake Ellis camp. While on the climb up, interests to see on this route is Lake Ellis, Nithi Falls, Gorges Valley and the Giant’s Billiard Table that are quite spectacular with magnificent views.
CHOGORIA ROUTE ITINERARY:
Day 1: Nairobi – Chogoria Town – Mount Meru Bandas, 10km and 2hrs walk, 950m ascent.
The trek starts with pick up from Nairobi at 0700hrs and drive northwards to Chogoria Town, aptly at 2000m asl for an early lunch. From this small Chogoria town, you will take a vehicle to the rain forest clearance located 16km where the trekking starts. This walk is through the rainforest in a dusty path which can sometimes become muddy during the rainy season. The hike will last 2hrs reaching Mount Meru Bandas on 2950m where dinner and first night will be camping tents.
Day 2: Mount Meru Bandas – Road Head – Lake Ellis, 5hrs, 13km, 700m ascent
A Wake up to breakfast here at Meru Bandas Campsite. Then after we follow the path through the giant heather and forest up to Chogoria road head, from where you detour with a descent to Nithi Falls then back track to Road Head Camp at an altitude of 3300m walking approximately 3-4hrs. You then, continue hiking from Road Head Camp for 1hr, following the track in the moorland and giant heather to arrive at Lake Ellis, through Mugi Hills (if you hike to the top of Mugi Hills you are able to have a view of the Billiard Table Mountain.Later you will then reach Lake Ellis Camp for dinner and overnight, 3650m.
Day 3: Lake Ellis Camp – Lake Michaelsons– hike of 12km in 4-5 hrs.
An early start with hiking through the track following a ridge up the mountain for approximately 3/4 hours. At an altitude of 4100m, join the mainly used track on the normal Chogoria route. Here, you will be amazed at the breathtaking views over the scenic Gorges Valley and the Hall Tarn that have magnificent views, Northern Moorlands and towards Ithanguni.Lunch enroute.
Further 1 hour descent to Lake Michaelsons (4700m) asl where we spend the rest of the evening resting and enjoying the lakes scenery. An option of going fishing around the lake later.
Dinner and overnight at the campsite.
Day 4: Lake Michaelsons – Upper Simba turn-hiking 5km, 4hrs- 5hrs
After an early breakfast, we set off to our next camp. From the camp we follow the steep gorge valley towards point Lenana. Here the views gets even better as we keep going up. Later we will arrive at the camp late afternoon where we will be served lunch.
We will spend the rest of the afternoon resting.Later we can do a short climb to acclamitize.
Dinner and Overnight at the campsite.
Day 5 : Upper Simba turn- Point Lenana - hiking 3km, 3hrs
You will wake up just slightly after midnight and be served biscuits, coffee, tea etc. Then will start your final climb at 3am hiking towards the main mountain peaks. After an hour of walking, we join Sirimon route trail, you arrive at Point Lenana by approximately 6:30 am to catch the sunrise over Kenya climaxing your climb to the top. There will be a photographic opportunity followed by a 2hrs descend via Sirimon route to Shipton Camp at 4200m taking 2hrs. Here, you will be served a well-deserved breakfast.
Later another 4hrs descent through the Mackinders Valley will see you arrive Old Moses Camp, located at 3300m for the lunch. Where your trip ends. Later catch your transport back to Nairobi after lunch
